The possibility that human sexual orientation is hard-wired in the brain before birth has emerged from a British study based on sex differences in the so-called startle response - the involuntary eye-blink reaction to a sudden loud noise. Heterosexual men and women have markedly different startle responses, while those shown by lesbians and gay men tend to more like those of heterosexual men, the study found. It is the first independent evidence of a non-learned basis for sexual orientation, according to the authors of a report in the October issue of the international journal Behavioral Neurosciencepublished by the American Psychological Association. This is very strong evidence that female sexual orientation at least may be 'hard-wired' in this region. Rahman, working with Dr Veena Kumari and Dr Glenn Wilson of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College, London, said in a media release that the new study found significant differences between the responses of males and females, and of heterosexual and homosexual subjects. Other researchers have shown that the strength of the startle response varies according to a person's emotional state. It is greater when people are anxious - and perhaps when they are angry or sad as well - and less when they are happy and relaxed. The team tested the responses of a variety of male and female, homosexual and heterosexual volunteers by unexpectedly startling them with loud noises preceded by a quieter noise. The release did not say how many subjects were involved. The scientists used a technique known as prepulse inhibition PPI. Rahman measured the strength of the involuntary eye-blink responses and compared them with the response to a loud noise alone - the higher the PPI, the stronger Twitter Gay Straight Sex level of inhibition and the less 'startled' a person appears. Heterosexual men were far more likely than heterosexual women to show a more inhibited eye-blink response that is, men don't blink as much. They showed a PPI of 40 per cent, compared with 13 per cent for the women. Lesbians, with a PPI of 33 per cent, showed an intermediate but markedly stronger inhibition than straight women, while gay men averaged 32 per cent, an intermediate response slightly lower than for straight men. Wilson's group has also been investigating how the response varies under the influence of smells, visual images and psychoactive drugs, using it as an objective way of gaining insights into emotional states and personality differences. Rahman believes the new findings may also have significant health implications, offering clues as to why men and women, and gay men and lesbians, sometimes suffer from different types of mental health disorders. Women, for example, are much more prone than men to suffer Twitter Gay Straight Sex clinical depression. Tags: healthneuroscience. Email the editor.
